Be an intern at Boston Children’s Museum!
As a learning and teaching museum, Boston Children’s Museum strives to provide meaningful learning experiences in the form of internship in departments throughout the museum.  Interns at Boston Children’s Museum gain experience in a non-profit museum setting and learn about what goes on behind the scenes at an internationally recognized children’s museum.  Internships are available in various areas of the museum depending on individual departments' needs.  Current openings may be viewed by visiting the links below.

EAST ASIA DEPARTMENT INTERN

TITLE: EAST ASIA DEPARTMENT INTERN

DATE: July 27, 2010

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This position will work with East Asian department members and assist them with various public programs and ongoing projects. The responsibilities of this position are valuable to the East Asian Program’s ability to explore the possibilities of expanding audiences and the continued thriving of the program as a center of East Asian Studies. The intern will assist with multiple projects involving Boston Children’s Museum East Asia Department.

These projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing programmatic and administrative support for upcoming professional development seminars
  • Developing website content

  • Updating teaching kits

  • Organizing past program files

  • Assisting with regular program events and exhibit introductions

LEARNING COMPONENT:

  • Understanding elements of a museum as a professional development institution for educators from local and international community – understanding BCM as a learning institute

  • Interacting with museum visitors, learning how the public uses the museum and how programs can be improved

  • Learning about various operations of a diverse museum environment

  • Becoming familiar with a children’s museum’s education programs and the mission and goals behind them

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Educational background in Asian Studies with a focus on China or Japan is preferred (Coursework may include history, art history, anthropology, sociology, literature, or other related interest areas)

  • Bilingual skills in reading/writing/speaking Chinese or Japanese a plus

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Working knowledge of office procedures and equipment

  • PC skills with knowledge of Windows applications a plus

  • Ability to work closely with people of diverse backgrounds

HOURS:
September-December, 2010. Minimum of 10 hours per week or per requirements for course credit; schedule to be determined

TEACHING KITS INTERNSHIP

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Museum Teaching Kits are multi-media, topic boxes filled with objects, artifacts, AV materials, activities and supplies to support educators who are implementing curriculum frameworks in multicultural classrooms. The intern will assist with general kit operations, such as taking inventory and preparing kits for shipping and assist the Kits Manager with kit circulation. Represents the Museum to educators in a professional, helpful manner.

LEARNING COMPONENT:

  • Become familiar with object-based learning and how BCM collections are used as educational tools for schools and after schools.

  • Learn to properly handle and pack teaching collections.

  • Understand the elements of an outreach program.

  • Learn the daily operations of a diverse Museum environment.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Some college, education or museum focus preferred.

  • Microsoft office suite, Photoshop or equivalent helpful.

TERM:
15 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 10am to 6pm flexible schedule. The next anticipated start date for this internship is Fall 2010.
