TITLE: ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT
DATE: September 12, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Assistant is responsible for counting, reconciling and depositing the daily admissions and Recycle Shop sales receipts. The Accounting Assistant interacts with Visitor Services Coordinators and admissions desk staff for the purposes of identifying and resolving discrepancies, monitoring accounting and internal control practices and notifying management regarding compliance and concerns. Duties also include file maintenance, accounting office operations and developing and maintaining vendor relationships.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Cashiering or equivalent experience required
- Proficiency with Word and Excel required
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent attention to detail, time management, problem-solving and organizational skills
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
HOURS: Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 5:00pm

TITLE: COLLECTIONS MANAGER

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Boston Children’s Museum seeks an experienced person to care for and maintain the Museum’s collection, which consists of 50,000 objects in the areas of natural history, international cultures, Native American cultures, and Americana. The Collections Manager has primary responsibility for overseeing and implementing all aspects of collection care, maintenance, safety, documentation, and use. S/he oversees daily use of the collections for exhibits and programs, as well as plans and undertakes long-term projects of documentation, use, care, and improvement. S/he advocates for and develops ways that the Museum Collection serves the Museum’s urban mission.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS in related field required; Master’s degree in area relevant to collection preferred
- 3-5 years of full-time museum experience in a comparable position is required.
- Must be familiar with current collections management strategies.
- Strong computer skills essential.
- Familiarity with world culture or natural history highly desirable.
- Able to work with a diverse and multi-talented staff.
HOURS: Monday-Friday, 35 hours/week.

TITLE: CONTROLLER
DATE: August 1, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is the Museum’s principal financial manager with responsibilities for a broad range of both strategic and task oriented duties including: oversight of the integrity of the Accounting Information System and its reporting; maintenance and adherence to internal controls; management of accounting staff; budget preparation and regular financial reporting internally and externally; and collection and disbursement of funds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS (CPA strongly preferred)
- Minimum five years related work experience in business, accounting, and finance. Supervisory experience required.
- Working proficiency with fund accounting; Experience with non-profits accounting required.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, and outside agencies.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated management skills.
- Experience with automated financial management software.
- Mental ability to balance competing demands, tight deadlines, frequent changes in priorities.

TITLE: EXHIBIT INTERPRETER

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Boston Children’s Museum seeks dynamic individuals with strong presentation skills, a commitment to informal education and experience leading experiential-learning programs for families and school/community groups. Reporting to the Education and Programs Director, the Exhibit Interpreter is responsible for leading a variety of programs in the areas of environmental and physical science, health & fitness, literacy, cultural education, and the arts. The Exhibit Interpreter works closely with Senior Educators on implementation of programs and serves as a role model of positive, proactive and informed visitor engagement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field strongly preferred. Directly relevant work experience may be substituted for education.
- Teaching experience or coursework in education and/or family learning preferred.
- Ability to simultaneously engage children and adults in an energetic, friendly, positive, and professional manner
- Ability to effectively engage visitors with, different learning styles.
- Ability to react positively to a rapidly changing environment.
- Must be comfortable leading interactive presentations and role-playing in a group setting.
- Must be comfortable and competent working with and teaching diverse, intergenerational audiences as well as non-English speakers and people with disabilities
- Ability to work with staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Theatrical or other performance experience a plus
- Fluency in multiple languages a plus.

TITLE: PLAYSPACE EDUCATOR
DATE: August 7, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The PlaySpace Educator designs and delivers programs for visitors ages 0-3 and their families, and oversees and staffs the PlaySpace Exhibit. The Educator works with the Director of Visitor Education and Programs to ensure the quality and variety of all PlaySpace programs and activities and maintains a welcoming, organized, clean, safe, and friendly environment for visitors. The Educator mentors and confers with the PlaySpace staff, (Exhibit Interpreters, Visitor Services Associates) in collaboration with the Family Learning Department, Director of Visitor Education and Programs, and Visitor Services Director, and acts as a liaison for MIT BabyLab staff, and incoming performers/presenters. The PlaySpace Educator works under the supervision of the Director of Visitor Education and Programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS in Early Childhood Education or Child Development
- Training and experience implementing Early Childhood Methodologies
- 2-5 years experience working with families and children ages 0-5, parenting experience a plus
- Experience working with families of young children and/or providing customer service
- Demonstrates sensitivity to issues affecting parents
- Experience with diverse populations
- Previous experience providing supervision preferred
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a part of a team
- Ability to speak multiple languages preferred.
- Ability to run team meetings, communicate well with colleagues

The museum program content areas include: the arts, science, health & fitness, literacy, and cultural education. The Exhibit Interpreter for PlaySpace works closely with the PlaySpace Team Leader, and Senior Educators on implementation of programs and serves as a role model of positive, proactive and informed visitor engagement.

TITLE: SENIOR PROJECTS DIRECTOR, FAMILY LEARNING
DATE: July 21, 2008 POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the VP of Family and Early Childhood Learning, the Senior Projects Director, Family Learning will create, execute and manage projects that serve children and families. Family engagement is a cornerstone strategy of the BCM program vision. S/he will lead key projects and work teams that further the strategy. These include: development of new exhibits and programs that incorporate the best of family learning principles; ongoing relationships and create new relationships as appropriate, which support family learning; development of the new projects, including staff training, that further the museum's Family Engagement Strategy.
Selected projects:
- Serve as Principal Investigator for an NSF-funded project, Preschoolers, Parents, and Educators (PPE). Work with PPE project researcher to conduct all related research and to develop research products and outcomes (includes development and production of protocol for evaluating family interactions in exhibits, assistance with videotaping and coding, interviewing of families and producing final project report)
- Countdown to Kindergarten Classroom- Under the direction of the VP, serve as chief project development person for this exhibit and program. Work with designers and program manager to develop content for the classroom and its programs. Prepare content/ activity matrix for exhibit with different audiences in mind. Serve as content liaison with project advisory boards and EC program partners working on school readiness issues
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters Degree in Early Childhood or related field
- Minimum of 5 years experience in the museum field or a related field
- Strong familiarity with the museum exhibit development process
- Strong research skills a must; incorporation of research into educative practice strongly preferred
- Familiarity with current family learning research required
- Excellent writing skills
- Proven ability and experience working successfully with diverse urban audiences
- Familiar with Early Childhood curriculum models, EC state and national performance standards, including Head Start and Mass DOE and NAEYC accreditation
- Experience with providing professional development and training for a diversity of adult learners (including museum floor staff, family child care providers, EC, HS and K teachers and parents) a plus
- Experience managing complex projects with budgets over $100,000
Additional Qualities
- Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese or Haitian Creole a plus

TITLE: TRAINING/ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER

A strategic vision for the Museum is to increase our capacity as a learning and teaching organization. The training and development manager will support this vision through the creation of a more skilled and diverse cultural and arts work force. The strategic learning and teaching initiatives will provide a comprehensive program that includes job skill training, professional development, career development and museum education certificate programs. The VP/HR and SR VP/ Research and Program Planning will design and oversee the initiatives within the learning and teaching agenda. The manager will develop and implement programs reflective of the strategic direction in close collaboration with other Museum management staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA required
- Minimum of 4 years experience, which includes demonstrated level of responsibility in training/development program design, management and delivery
- Demonstrated curriculum development skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse staff and in an urban environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills that demonstrate ability to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels of the organization

TITLE: VISITOR SERVICES ASSOCIATE
DATE: August 7, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Visitor Service Associate (VSA) role is essential in ensuring a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable visit for the museum’s visitors. The VSA staffs exhibits, activities, and admissions, focusing on customer service, visitor engagement, and operations. The VSA is the front line for services such as greeting visitors, answering questions, acknowledging visitor comments and concerns, and providing a quality experience for all visitors. This position is dependent upon the ability to learn and communicate efficiently, cash register skills, strong multi-tasking, the ability to work and think quickly under pressure, and the ability to engage visitors of all ages. The VSA contributes to the museum’s customer service mission, ensuring a quality experience in a polite, engaging, and professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent. BA/BS or some college preferred
- Must have strong customer service skills
- Previous cash handling experience preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills
- Experience working with children and families
- Ability to engage children and adults in an energetic, friendly, positive, and professional manner
- Ability to react positively to a rapidly changing environment
- Must be comfortable dealing with large groups of people
- Ability to work with staff and public from diverse backgrounds
