If Boston Children’s Museum is “Boston’s Bridge to Fa mily Fun,”
Museum staff members are the ultimate bridge builders. Through
their connections in the larger Boston community, they invite new
people to experience the Museum. They then greet everyone who walks
through the front door of the Museum with a smile and a genuine“Welcome to Boston Children’s Museum!”
The staff’s diverse life experiences – shaped by family, community,
culture, and education – make the Museum the place it is today.
Boston Children’s Museum employees hail from places as close as the
numerous Boston neighborhoods to as faraway as South Africa. The Museum currently has employees from 13 states, including Michigan,
Pennsylvania, Washington, Connecticut, New Jersey, California, Texas,
New Hampshire, Illinois, Maine, New York, Colorado, and of course,
Massachusetts. Staff members also come to the Museum from places
outside the United States. These countries include Venezuela, Canada,
Jamaica, Vietnam, Albania, Cape Verde, the Dominican Republic and
South Africa. The diversity of the Museum’s staff makes it an intriguing
example of a global village right in Boston’s backyard.
Not only can Museum visitors interact with an international staff at the
Museum, they can also expect to be greeted by staff members who
speak the same language as they do. Today’s staff members speak at
least 11 languages: English, Spanish, Russian, French, German, Mandarin
Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Albanian, Creole, and Cape Verdean Creole.
Employees now wear buttons that inform visitors what languages they
speak. Visitor experiences are enhanced when they can communicate
with others in the language they understand best.
Museum staff members not only share Boston Children Museum’s
message with the world but also share the world with those
within the Museum. They are the bridge builders who make the
Museum “Boston’s Bridge to Family Fun.” [back to
