Children of Hangzhou: Connecting with China

Join four teens from Hangzhou at home, at school, in the theater, and in the countryside. These Hangzhou youth introduce themselves through video diaries and the activities of their daily lives. Visitors discover that Chinese life today mixes ancient traditions with modern lifestyles, and that life in China is both similar to and different from life in North America.

Join the four teens and learn what life is like for them:

Weicheng
Hey, I'm Zhang Weicheng (Zhāng Wéichéng). I'm 14 and in the 8th grade. I live with my parents and grandparents in the Wu Lin Men Apartments. Living with three generations under one roof shows how important families are to us.

Gangzheng
Hi! My name is Xie Gangzheng (Xiè Gāngzhèng). I'm 15 years old and I'm in the 9th grade. I study hard and I play hard—I love all sports! Come visit my classroom at Bao Chu Ta Middle School.

Qianyun
Ni hao! I'm Guo Qianyun (Guō Qiànyún). I'm 16 and I attend an arts school near Hangzhou where I am learning Chinese opera. When I'm not practicing opera, I'm shopping or hanging out with my friends. Come see me in the theater where I perform.

Doudou
Hi!  I'm Wang Minru (Wáng Mǐnrú), but everyone calls me Doudou (Dòudou).  I'm 12 years old and in the 6th grade. I live in the city, but every weekend, we visit my grandparents in the countryside.  Join me for a trip to Huang Tian Fan Village and visit our laojia—hometown.
