Canoe
Canoe, by Gladys Widdiss

Canoe, by Gladys Widdiss, Aquinnah, 1988

Gladys Widdiss chose this canoe because "we always did pottery. Then we started doing beadwork necklaces. One day, we were up at the cliffs and my mother said, 'We have everything here for girls and nothing for boys.' We all looked at her, and she said, 'Well, I think we should start making canoes for the boys.' Of course, girls could use them, too -- to put hair clips or pins in."

This canoe was made by Gladys Widdiss, Aquinnah Wampanoag. She is a past Aquinnah Tribal President, and a current member of the Tribal Council. Gladys, a greatly respected elder and educator, continues the centuries-old tradition of pottery-making.
